This is how it's going to happen...
You're going to come across a piece of information for the 6th or 7th time. Your recollection of earlier instances of related information may be hazy or only partially recounted.
As the piece of information shows up again for you, you'll have a stronger internal sense to listen to your responding internal dialogue. That is, if you don't block it - disregarding your ability to cross-reference the information and make connections.
The forming of belief from external sources is powerful. It's a cumulative process of hearing the information from multiple external sources and integrating them with existing beliefs. Ideally, new information is derived from TRUSTED sources. But how often is information taken from sources that have proven to be untrustworthy? It's important you explore how you verify what is considered a trusted source for you.
As you gather new information and allow it to register, you'll question some of the previously held information. You'll feel a refined sense of doubt associated with false information that was repeatedly told to you. Identifying the erroneous information that was projected upon you through the delivery of a force-fed narrative via media or from others who are parroting force-fed narratives.
Internal vs External building of belief
In practice, any belief is something you think over and over again. Carving that thought or idea into a segment of your chosen belief system. Therefore, any thought, if given consistent and repeated "airtime" can work its way into your belief system. This occurs overtly and covertly. This occurs consciously and subconsciously.
If you continuously keep yourself externally "nudged" by media sources, you may add selected repeated ideas into your mind sphere without deliberate intent. You can entrain yourself by the mere repetition of the idea within your submerged information ecology. You don't even have to agree with the idea or information, depending on what entrainment tactics are being used.
The external nudging makes it harder for you to listen to your internal nudging when determining what is more likely to be true. Internal nudging is usually more subtle and comes from your experiential wisdom. The external nudging from media sources is often overpowering relative to inner knowing. Can you sense your personal differential in relation to the pull of these two forces? Which are you listening to when guiding your adaptation to new beliefs?
Readjusting from continuous external input
A guiding practice is to reaffirm your intention to explore internal sources. Especially if you feel this practice has gotten lost. Can you sense access to your internal rudder as you set to navigate any stream?
You can still explore external sources. Just be sure to listen to multiple, trusted sources, in combination with your own experiential wisdom. Pay attention to what information rings true within you. Be mindful of when an external talking point doesn't fully jibe with you. Enhance your sensitivity for when something sounds "off" - don't disregard those cues.
Refamiliarize yourself with the subtle identifiers for misalignment. When realigning, even one subtle instance of awareness can bring about a chain reaction of dismantling building blocks of a previous false belief. It may not have been the intention to knock down a whole construct, but there's possibility for this to happen. You’ll be able to withstand it.
The approach can appear in the form of a question, a thought bubble coming up, like how a gasp of air feels after being submerged. It may be accompanied by acute anxiety or disillusionment. Amidst the discomfort, a clear signal will emerge. As clearer signals occur, simply comfort yourself that you're "collecting your thoughts." The acute anxiousness IS the start of the clearing. It's not meant to be avoided, rather it’s meant to be worked through.
Dissolution as an active participant
The precursor to this process is what could be termed cognitive dissonance. Cognitive dissonance is the mental discomfort of holding conflicting beliefs. Rather than feel the psychological stress, usually one belief is chosen over another. Although, it can be easy to get stunted in this process. When stunted, the accompanying distress or anxiety becomes normalized.
The optimal path is to feel the relief from opposing beliefs by having one of them dissolve. When in alignment, the dissolution is of the false belief. When connected to one's inner knowing and the natural external world, the process becomes seamless. Stay blissfully diligent though. If you don't continue to affirm the new information, the previous erroneous externally repeated information will likely set back in.
Even if you consider yourself more of an internal processor, it would be best to talk this through with a good friend or trusted practitioner. Actively choosing your engagement includes externally processing your thoughts and feelings. The thoughts will settle. You'll see the false information for what it is. And for the most part, you'll carry on each day as you do. Maybe a little lighter along the way.
