I tend to exaggerate negative thoughts to a point where it doesn’t even remotely resemble the original thought. I feel I do this with too much ease and lose the lesson. Sometimes the exaggeration goes the other way and I feel even more angry even though what I’m believing now isn’t even remotely true.

For sure I've been of a frame of mind where the exaggeration has gone in the other direction (so yes, if it goes that way, may be good to shift to a 'cut if off' technique. When you mention about the possibility of losing the lesson, that's something to take into consideration. Integration is so key, so if there's a lesson there, you won't want to exaggerate away from it.
