I was talking to a friend the other day about my writing process. It felt really good to express to her why I'm doing this. Why I'm writing on Substack? Why there’s a High Heart weekly? What is it all for?
While it’s very clear to me - and I describe this on my About page - I believe it's good to revisit the "why" when it comes to producing and sharing content. Why am I doing this? It goes beyond my ability and enjoyment of writing; I see it as a service to humankind. Let me extrapolate.
My commitment to writing and sharing online fulfills a variety of needs, including… A need to express myself. A need to collate my thoughts. A need to share favorable practices and processes. A need to serve a greater good by assisting others with their needs. The intention behind these shared perspectives breathes expansion into our collective experience.
Going Beyond Consuming Content
With regard to mainstream culture, I've recognized that many people are mostly overstimulated and overwhelmed. It's challenging for people to carve out time to get familiar with practices that enhance their quality of life. Sure, there are plenty of influencers online to follow regarding various topics, but viewing a content creator's stuff only scratches the surface. What's beyond the surface?
Where's the depth and intimacy to move beyond the barrage of messaging that’s experienced when scrolling online. Even the best of messages can start to resonate as contributing to the noise. Where's the signal that allows you to find the empowerment to be the driving force in your own life? Is the shared content leading yourself back to you? Back to you conjuring the strength to improve your quality of life.
I notice others feeling like they don’t have permission to slow down. They're craving quiet and alone time. In juxtaposition, I feel like I have lots of quiet and alone time. I’m fortunate in my ability to carve time for myself; it sustains and revitalizes me. I'm also able to carve out time to be part of someone else's support system. My work/practice is complex and deep, and worth my efforts to position myself in that role.
What Does the Work/Practice Look Like?
What is the work/practice I speak of? It's what I like to call high heart activation. It's the crossroads of self-care and caring for your greater good. While the nuances look different for each individual, the main blueprint is generally the same. Take care of yourself, build your life force, exact your personal empowerment, and pay it forward toward your surroundings. This is how you extend your circle of influence to affect your circle of concerns. How can you continually take actions that line up as win/win for the personal and the collective?
The practices I use for myself are the same as those I provide with others when we work together. I use psychological approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy and re-evaluation counseling. My engagement style is infused with influences from compassionate communication/NVC (non-violent communication) and IFS (internal family systems). While pulling from metaphysical practices like chakra clearing, astrology and human design. With physical prioritization around a minimalist lifestyle, clean eating, mindful fasting/cleansing, massage and movement practices.
These methodologies are all “tools in the toolbox.” Weaving into an ongoing, foundational guidance apparatus. These threads run through my own personal empowerment practices and the work I do serving others. Informing what I choose to write about and how I write about those subjects. For further categorization, it all falls under the umbrella of holistic health and wellness.
Interweaving a Broader Fabric
Let's put a fine point on it! It's not just what I write about, but how I choose to write about it. This is key! All of what I’ve stated above serve one's personal goals, while feeding into the improved quality of the collective. There’s an intentional fabric being weaved here. I hope you can see it. Maybe you don’t see some of the broader fabric at the moment. Maybe you’re dipping in for an article or two based on the topic at hand. Although there's a bigger picture at place. I will continue to speak to it.
My intention for sharing this broader fabric is to allow us to set some things in motion. Things we may not see come to fruition as quickly as a more acutely defined goal. This could be a new idea to consider or reframing the existing constructs around us. This could be taking an action of self-care or engaging a practice that will spark creativity and confidence in what you'd like to be doing.
When I zoom out to talk about societal topics, I wonder if anyone questions why I make these editorial decisions. Why do I talk about these extraneous issues about models and structures interwoven with self-care and holistic health? Well, for starters, I see those topics as extensions of holistic health and wellness. I also have an innate inclination to want to understand things. I believe I attract others who share such curiosity. When I discuss “hot topics” it’s not because I think I’m "right" or wish to convince others of my perspective. It’s because I want to spark discussion. Allowing each of us to build further insight and questions.
I appreciate you being here and witnessing the journey. Part of the interwoven expansion that's unfolding. I have a loosely outlined map of where it's heading. It's guided by intention more so than by goals or outcomes. Part of the process will be checking in as we continue to chart the course. Feedback loops for the win!
Many people become overwhelmed and overstimulated after being bombarded by a day in the life of the Information Age. We forget that although our well of energy is endless, we need to take the time to replenish our supply-give back to ourselves so that we may support those we come in contact with more fully. Your thoughts are a welcome reminder to do just that. More than simple self-care (although that forms a small part of it), it is essential, especially for those called to be caregivers, that we nourish mind, body, and spirit.
